History and wine

History and wine (Jasło-Dukla trail)

The trail runs across the picturesque foothill area of Jasło, then to the central part of the Low Beskids, and ends in Dukla.

  1. Jasło has only a few historic buildings that survived its turbulent past, especially World Wars I and II. It is worth seeing the Gothic collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and an exceptionally beautiful manor complex in the Gorajowice district. It is best to come to Jasło in August, when the International Wine Days are organized, and visit several local wineries.

  2. Just a few kilometres west of Jasło there is a true gem for tourists – the Archaeological Open Air Museum, the Carpathian Troy in Trzcinica (Skansen Archeologiczny Karpacka Troja). Here you can learn about the history of a stronghold dating back to the Bronze Age.

  3. In the nearby village of Przysieki there is a must-visit winery, Winnica Dwie Granice.

  4. Those who have more time can go to nearby Brzyska, and then to the car park at the foot of Liwocz Mountain. From there you take a short walk to the top of the mountain with a viewing tower. The 360° view will reward those who took the time and effort to ascend the mountain.

  5. North and south of Jasło there are many cemeteries from World War I, with memorials designed by Austro-Hungarian artists. A number of them are wonderful works of art, made in stone or wood. We recommend seeing at least a few of them.

  6. Heading south to Dębowiec, there in the sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette, with a copy of the sculpture of Our Lady of La Salette famous for miracles. The preserved wooden architecture gives a lot of charm to this picturesque town.

  7. Going through Osiek Jasielski, which has a must-see wooden church from 1419, the trail takes you to Nowy Żmigród, with an interesting church from the 16th c. and a historic cemetery with a vast military headquarters from World War I.

  8. From Żmigród you can go south to Krempna, the heart of the Magura National Park, and further through the Beskid Mountains to the border with Slovakia and Bardejov.

  9. You can also go east, and after passing Iwla, neighbouring Death Valley, the place of the fiercest battles of 1944, reach Dukla. After seeing splendid historic buildings and a museum, you end the trip with delicious beer from the local brewery, Browar Dukla.
