Beksiński, absinthe and the Bieszczady route

Beksiński, absinthe and the Bieszczady route (Sanok-Bieszczady trail)

The trail runs through the borderland of the Low Beskids and the Bieszczady Mountains, a diverse region of rich nature and culture.

  1. The trip starts in Sanok, a town with the largest collection of art works by Zdzisław Beksiński, one of the most valuable collections of icons, and the largest open air museum of architecture in Poland. There is also a winery worth visiting, Winnica Dolina Sanu in the Olchowce district.

  2. Next on the trail is Zagórz, where you can see the largest ruins of a monastery with a viewing tower in Poland, an Orthodox church from the 19th c., and a Roman Catholic church with a late-Gothic miraculous image of Our Lady.

  3. When in Lesko, it is worth visiting the synagogue from the 17th c., one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the region, the castle of the Kmita and Krasicki families, and a church built in 1539.

  4. After leaving Lesko for Ustrzyki Dolne, you pass by a majestic and legendary sandstone outcrop, Kamień Leski.

  5. Soon you get to Uherce Mineralne, where you can rent a rail bike (Bieszczadzkie Drezyny Rowerowe), and visit the Crazy House (Chatka Wariatka) and the local artisan brewery, Browar Ursa Maior.

  6. In nearby Orelec there is Zagroda Magija, offering accommodation in the historic rooms of old wooden houses and organizing great cultural events.

  7. From Uherce you can go to Myczkowce and Solina. In Myczkowce, in the grounds of the Caritas centre, there is a large open air museum of architecture with miniatures of wooden churches from the Carpathian region, the Biblical Garden, a minizoo and a collection on natural history.

  8. You reach Solina, admiring on the way the artificial Lake Myczkowieckie. In Solina you can tour the famous Bieszczady dam, take a boat cruise, and rent equipment for water sports.

  9. You now head to Hoczew, where you can see the wonderful art gallery of Zdzisław Pękalski and a church in the Baroque style.

  10. From Hoczew you go south on the Bieszczady ring road, via Baligród, to the famous village of Cisna, where you can have a rest and a meal and head further to Smolnik nad Osławą, to visit an unusual artisan distillery making nalevkas, Bieszczadzkie Smaki. Here you can try the flavours of the Bieszczady Mountains captured in bottles. The distillery also makes absinthe called Bieszczadzka Wróżka. It can only be properly tasted in the cosy restaurant Hipisówka in Dołżyca near Cisna.
